Paragon was a HIT!!

Thanks to everyone who made it over to Paragon last night! Everyone had a great time watching Taylor Graham carefully pour the beers, with his teammates Roger Levesque, Nate Jaqua, Pat Noonan, Mike Fucito, and James Riley. Thanks all of you, every time you sub-in behind the bar, a SCORES elementary student gets to keep playing soccer!

The Sounders attracted the guests who collectively donated almost $900 to Seattle's youth getting soccer and writing coaching for more seasons to come!!

In addition to the Sounders behind the bar, we had great prize drawing items ranging from autographed memorabilia to bottles of wine to restaurant gift certificates. It great to see some SCORES supporters walk home with these.

We also have to give a big shout out to Paragon for hosting the shindig, getting Budweiser to make some posters and provide Sounders FC pint glasses. Thanks!

Also, thanks to Flavor of Seattle who keep coming to our events and donating a portion of their gift card sales to SCORES. Keep it guys, we appreciate it.

A St. Paddy's day SCORES Update!

Here are a few updates about SCORES activities...

Sounders Community Shield Match
We also want to send a big thank you to all of the 18,000 plus fans who stood out in the rain for last Thursday's Sounders match. Some of the Community Shield match's proceeds will go to the four community partners, including SCORES Seattle! The funds will help soccer touch the lives of almost 200 elementary students this spring and beyond. THANKS!!

NY Slam Poets
On Last Friday some of the staff got to go watch some of the practice rounds of our national slam poets. The poems, the performance and speaking styles are really coming together for these two poet-athletes. Eddie has really put a beat/rhythm behind his words. You can hear the hip hop behind each of his lines and stanzas. Milla has a poem with her insights into her everyday life, but the surprise is that she is a fluent Russian speaker. She incorporates a little of her mother's native language into the poem too! New York is going to be great!

Coach Refresher Sessions
The writing coaches got togeth
er and there was a lot of discussion about what the spring curriculum and what service learning is all about. They talked about ways to avoid disengagement and some hypothesizing about projects and ways to make the experience stronger. All of the great veteran coaches shared stories and offered advice based on their firsthand experience.

“It’s fantastic to see the teachers coming together and talking about how they can make the experience more impactful and exciting for these kids,” said Carolyn Clark, America SCORES Seattle VISTA. “Seeing them invest their time and energy the way they have is the most we can expect from anyone we try to engage with our organization.”

The soccer coaches received some soccer training from Seattle University's head assistant coach, an assistant coach and a couple players who ran through the drills being taught. After the coaching session there was a SCORES coach scrimmage where everyone ran around getting into SCORES mode. Afterward the coaches gathered in a classroom to talk amongst themselves about best practices.

Happy St. Paddy's day! Remember to wear your green, maybe a Rave Green Sounders jersey.

New SCORES PSA

Here is a new America SCORES Seattle public service announcement. It features Kasey Keller with a couple of our very own SCORES poet-athletes from Dunlap Elementary.

Taylor Graham wins Humanitarian Award

Sounders FC's defense man Taylor Graham won the team's Humanitarian Award for his charitable work. He has been especially active with America SCORES Seattle this season.

Taylor has been unable to play for much of the season due to some foot injuries. So instead of being inactive with his time off, he has been very active in charities like ours.

Taylor has been a huge asset to SCORES this season. He made it to our Fall Frenzy soccer event in September. Taylor walked around talked to all poet-athletes, having pictures taken and really making the students day.

You could see the kids smiles grow when he approached each team. However, some teams made him prove he actually played for the Sounders. He had to list off most of the team's roster before they would believe him. Once he did though, the smiles grew larger and larger as the kids believed they were in the presence of a professional athlete. He really helped make the afternoon special for the kids.

Taylor also came to our Poetry Slam! last month. He was one of the judges. The kids lit up again when they saw him walking through the auditorium. But the students surprised Taylor at the event when the Dunlap boys dropped his name in their poem. Taylor's smile was as big as the kids! It was a great night of the kids poetry and another example of him, just by being there, making others feel special.

The SCORES staff wants to thank Taylor for all his efforts with our organization this year. Also, congratulations on a well deserved award.

Great Pub Event Last Thursday

We raised over $3,500 at last Thursday's pub event! We had tons of players show up: Fredy Montero, Taylor Graham, Seth Stammler and Kevin Goldthwaite. There were many supporters who came and generously bid on silent auction items and bought prize tickets.
Many of our SCORES coaches came and had a chance for a night out on us. It was the least we could do after a season of hard work with the poet-athletes this fall. We hope to see you all next season.
The staff would like to thank Soudners FC, adidas and MLS W.O.R.K.S. for their prize donations, without these the night couldn't have gone as well.
Thank you to all the silent auction bidders and congratulations to all the prize drawing winners.

SCORES-Sounders Pub Event

Everyone on the SCORES staff wants to send a thank you to the Sounders Coach Sigi, Chris Henderson, the George and Dragon for hosting the event and everyone who came out to support SCORES! Thanks!
The pub event on Wednesday was a resounding success. We saw a great game with a stoppage-time header to tie the game for Team USA. There was a heartfelt tribute to Charlie Davies, the Team USA forward who was involved in a car accident. Lastly, we had an insightful discussion with Sounders Coach Sigi and Technical Director Chris Henderson.
With all this great action going on we also raised over $1,000 for SCORES programs!
We'll let everyone know about next month's Scores-Sounders Pub Event when the date is finalized.
