Happy National Poetry Month!

April is National Poetry Month!

Celebrate it with America SCORES Seattle!

A poem a day
will keep the brain heart soul
at play!

Let's start this wonderful, wordy month with a poem from one of our SCORES Poet-Athletes with a bright perspective for this sunny afternoon. Enjoy!

"When I Open My Eyes"

When I open my eyes I see the world, the forests, the rivers and more.
I see the animals and people and shops.
The parks and the fun, the beaches and the water.
I see the schools and the students- waiting to learn while the teacher talks.
I see an artist painting on a canvas, stroke by stroke.
When I open my eyes I see the mountains high, tall and proud, waiting for people to climb them.
I see the beautiful scenery, waiting to be found.
I hear the waterfalls rush as it goes down.
I see the King of the Jungle, sitting atop a hill, watching his Kingdom.
When I open my eyes, I see EVERYTHING.

Def. Team·work /ˈtēmˌwərk/ noun -- (JR SCORES with the inside scoop!)

team·work
/ˈtēmˌwərk/
noun

What is your definition of teamwork? Our JR SCORES Poet-Athletes have some ideas on the matter. Check out these amazing Teamwork Crests created by our Dunlap JR SCORES Teams:

Being Nice
Passing the ball
Picking Teammates up when they fall
Saying "Good Try"
Congratulating the opposing team
"Thank You" and "You're Welcome"
Listening to each other
and
Sharing in the Classroom
(just like they are demonstrating below)

Keep up the sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork and creativity JR SCORES!

SCORES Version K-2.0 -- JR SCORES

The winter weather can be frightful,
but SCORES is so delightful,
As long as there's time in the day,
Let us play, let us play, let us play!

We are excited to announce that our Junior SCORES Program is now underway at all our SCORES' Elementary Schools. Junior SCORES is offered for slightly smaller teams, in number and in size, made up of Kindergarten through Second Grade students and is enjoyed two afternoons a week by our new initiates! They are tackling soccer balls and poetry just like our regular season "Senior" SCORES teams but in this cold and wet winter season they stay inside the gym. Indoor soccer makes for endless running-- lots of sweat and smiles!

We caught up with one JR SCORES group at Dunlap Elementary
Coach Blair helped her players with dribbling techniques,

 they practiced juggling,

 and trapping the ball.
Keep up the great work Dunlap!

We also had the privilege of meeting some of the Highland Park team at practice
Warm ups with Coach Andy look like a lot of fun

Look at that control while dribbling!

An open interpretation of "heading the soccer ball" :)

It's setting up to be a great Winter JR SCORES Season!

Foosball!

48 Quarters
25+ Drinks Consumed
3 Headbands
2 Countries Represented
1 Order of Poutine
1 Champion

Congratulations to Geoff, our first winner of the America SCORES Seattle Foosball tournament! Geoff took home the coveted Sounders soccer ball as well as forever being enshrined in the annals of SCORES foosball history.

Titans clash as Roxhill Elementary girl's coach Sara Haug takes on foosball Goliath: Geoff

SCORES Seattle would like to extend a big thanks to Brass Tacks in Georgetown for generously hosting the raucous SCORES crowd (try their poutine, you won't regret it). Also, thanks to all of our brave competitors who left everything on the table. Though they may not have hoisted the trophy above their heads at the end of the night, they found themselves warmed with pride (not just beer) at having competed with giants among tiny plastic soccer men.

Fresh Off the Waiver Wire: Andy Herriott!

Hey there! My name's Andy Herriott and I'll be joining Seattle SCORES with Coach Across America as an Americorps member this season!

(I'm on the left)

After working as a City Year Corps Member at Roxhill Elementary I became well acquainted with not just the SCORES program, but also the effect it has on all the youth that participate in it. Having a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing I often mentioned that it would have been the perfect program for me growing up, so when the listing came up I jumped on the chance immediately.  I’m excited to be a part of the SCORES family and be a part of something that brings so much joy and excitement to youth across Seattle.

Who is your favorite writer?
I don’t think anyone ever has just one favorite writer, but my list includes Raymond Carver, Haruki Murakami, Richard Brautigan, George Saunders, Tony Hoagland, Mark Strand. The more I think about it the more I want to include, but I suppose you have to cut it off somewhere.

What is your favorite sport?
The sport I've played the longest is lacrosse, but I've always been interested in sports that weren't incredibly “main stream” in the US. During the Olympics I love watching things like curling, badminton, table tennis, and handball. Watching the best athletes in the world compete in a sport they love is always amazing to me.

Favorite sports moment?
Watching South Korea play Uruguay in the knockout stage of the 2010 World Cup. Somehow we had ended up in the South Korean fan section and it was a crazy experience. They had a giant flag that they pulled over the entire section as well as giant drums and signs. They were the most upbeat and excited fans I had ever seen and the South Korean team had a really exciting play style. You never knew what was going to happen when they were playing that year.

Favorite Food?

Even after having worked as a wood fire oven pizza cook for almost 5 years, I will always say pizza. The possibilities of what you can put on a piece of dough and stick into an oven are endless. Give me some prosciutto, mushrooms, and red onions on top of some mozzarella, provolone, garlic, and olive oil and I’m in heaven.
